The state of the party
Some libertarians say that the party is not what it was ten years ago. They're right.
While some state and local parties have held to a principled libertarian message, the party as a whole has lost its way. A watered-down platform, combined with leaders and candidates who are increasingly indistinguishable from marginally pro-freedom Republicans, is not a party worthy of the support of those who seek freedom.
Some activists have been driven to the conclusion that hardcore libertarians should abandon the LP and let it fade away. We disagree. America needs a libertarian political party now more than ever, and we believe the LP can be that party again.
It's worth saving
We believe that the LP is worth fighting for, and we're not giving up. Ask any libertarian in the movement where they started their activism. Odds are that the answer will be "the LP."
Our presidential campaigns used to recruit and energize thousands of new activists. The LP has been the feeder organization for the broader libertarian movement for most of the last forty years. It provides an in-person experience, where people come together, get the word out, and yes, discuss issues and philosophy. It is during these repeated interactions that liberty sympathizers become hardcore minarchists, and minarchists begin to question the need for any state whatsoever.
Those transformations do happen without the LP, but no other libertarian movement institution thus far approaches the LP's record of success in educating and energizing libertarian activists.
The plan
The only way to restore the party is through the dedicated work of committed activists. Here's what you need to do to win your party back:
-
1.Become a dues-paying member of the national party. Or your state party. Or both.
-
2.Join the LP Radicals mailing list.
-
3.Make plans to be at the national convention in St. Louis next May. You need to be a delegate if you want to have any say in the direction of the party, our platform, and our leadership. If you don't know how to become a delegate, ask on the mailing list.
-
4.Get involved locally. If you have enough party members in your district who are willing to fill the officer roles, form an affiliate. If you need help, ask on the mailing list.
-
5.Donate to keep our ads running on Free Talk Live, or sponsor some ads of your own where you think they will do the most good.
-
6.Rally other principled libertarians to this effort. Blog it. Facebook it. Tweet it. Make it your project, and run with it.
That's it. See you in St. Louis.
